Blue Alchemy presents a contemporary look at the use of Woad -- a natural pigment produced by the plant, Isatis Tinctoria. Cultivated as a textile dye since the prehistoric era, it fell out of favor around the 1850s when replaced by synthetic, coal tar-based colors. A resurgence of this natural pigment has occurred in the last few years with the desire for non-toxic, environmentally friendly materials.

The title, Blue Alchemy, alludes to the actual transformation of the Woad plant into blue pigment, but it also references the alchemical process, and transformative power of creatively engaging with matter. Working within the confines of Woad's spectrum, five Bay Area women artists discover contemporary uses for this ancient substance, presenting works in drawing, painting, fibre, encaustic, installation and video.
