Gus John is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Education, University of London, and Associate Professor at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning where he co-facilitates a management development programme for global majority senior teachers aspiring to become headteachers, and runs a Leadership Development Programme for headteachers and principals.

He conducted an audit of the Higher Education sector's performance in implementing race legislation in England, Scotland and Wales for their respective funding councils and has carried out Equality and Diversity surveys for a number of institutions, including The University of Salford, and trained senior managers in conducting impact assessment. He was for four years external evaluator of the Law Society with a focus on their performance in promoting equity and combating discrimination in the Solicitors' profession. Professor John is an international consultant on, among other things, conflict resolution and peace building and is engaged currently in such work in the Niger Delta.

In 1989 he became the first black director of education in the UK, having been deputy director of education (post school) in the Inner London Education Authority. He has recently published The Case for a Learner's Charter for Schools.
