QUINTETS, MORE THAN ‘BLACK AND WHITE’ WITH SINFONIA TORONTO

Virtuosic clarinetist James Campbell returns to Toronto to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet. The program also features pianist Dmitry Gordin in Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet. The orchestra’s Music Director Nurhan Arman will conduct the performance on Friday, January 20 at Glenn Gould Studio. The program also includes Mozart’s Sinfonia K. 137.

Hailed as “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist” (Toronto Star), James Campbell has performed as a soloist with some of the world’s most prominent orchestras, including four performances of Copeland’s Clarinet Concerto with the composer conducting. Over thirty pieces have been written for him and he also boasts an impressive discography. Mr. Campbell is currently Professor of Clarinet at Indiana University.

Russian Pianist Dmitry Gordin has toured Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Cyprus, Germany, and the USA. Often featured as a soloist, Mr. Gordin boasts an impressive repertoire including works of Scarlatti, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Shumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Barber, and Shostakovitch.

On their October 2010 to Spain, Sinfonia Toronto received calls for encores at every performance, and performed an astounding four encores at l’Auditori in Barcelona. The chamber orchestra has been praised for it’s commitment to performing works by Canadian composers. The orchestra’s repertoire includes selections from every stylistic period. Recent recordings include the JUNO winner Flanders Field Reflections, a Marquis Classics (EMI) CD of music by John Burge, and most recently Hollywood Flute, featuring acclaimed flutist Louise DiTullio.

Sinfonia Toronto’s Music Director Nurhan Arman's guest-conducting engagements for the 2011-12 season include several special-theme programs: an all-French program with Russia's Hermitage Orchestra for the Tzar's Village Festival in St. Petersburg, an all-Shostakovich program with the Kharkov Philharmonic in Ukraine and an Opera Gala in Prague's National Theatre. He will also conduct the Czech State Philharmonic in Smetana Hall in Prague and return to Brazil to lead the Sergipe Symphony Orchestra.
