Biophilia: The Human Need for Nature
Dr. Stephen R. Kellert, ecologist
Friday, May 20, 7:30 pm
Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Dr. Stephen Kellert, Tweedy Ordway professor emeritus, senior research scholar at Yale University’s School of Forestry and Studies, will explore the role of natural systems in human biology and culture by reviewing the theory of biophilia. He will describe how this hypothesized inherent need to affiliate with nature is influenced by experience, learning and culture. He will examine how children’s experience of nature is an essential component of maturation and discuss the rapid decline in children’s contact with natural systems. He will consider the notion of “biophilic design” as a strategy for creating positive connections between people and nature.
