Mark Cantor's Giants of Jazz on Film
Duke Ellington’s music has been described as being “beyond category,” and there is a great deal of truth in the statement. We’ll revisit his amazing career through his initial success at Harlem’s “Cotton Club,” through the Swing Era when his band was at its creative peak; through the transition period to modern jazz, and into the 1950s and beyond when Ellington’s name became associated worldwide with the best in American jazz. Most of the clips screened tonight are true audio-visual rarities, and most have never been screened for the JCCSF audience!
