Beyond Brushwork: Symbolism in Chinese Painting November 15, 2006

Until recently, traditional scholarship on Chinese painting focused mainly on brushwork. Contemporary researchers now examine the objects within Chinese paintings for their symbolic meanings, such as longevity and good fortune, and for their social and political commentary. By presenting works by masters and anonymous painters alike, this exhibition delves into the context of many familiar yet unappreciated motifs.
