Beyond Baroque is one of the United States' leading independent Literary/Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to poetry, literary and cultural events; contact, interaction, and community building. Founded in 1968, it is based in the Old Town Hall in Venice, California. It offers a program of readings, new music, free workshops, publishing, bookstore, archiving, and education. The Center launched its own imprint, Beyond Baroque Books in 1998, dedicated to emerging, overlooked, out of print, and experimental writing, as well as the history and legacy of experimental and alternative writing, poetry, and the arts in Los Angeles. Beyond Baroque Poetry Workshop is the longest-running free poetry workshop on the West Coast. Many of the city’s leading literary talents – Dennis Cooper, Wanda Coleman, Tom Waits, Exene Cervenkova, Amy Gerstler – are workshop alumni. Beyond Baroque archives the West Coast’s most comprehensive, independent collection of small press and limited-edition publications.

Beyond Music is a curated series at Beyond Baroque that features local and international composers and performers who explore the boundaries of diverse musical genres. The series provides a platform for audiences to hear world renowned musicians, such as Wadada Leo Smith; a lab setting for LA-based musicians like Motoko Honda where she can develop new work; the elusive Harold Budd and electric Carl Stone who come to present intimate evenings of their music; and finally, a venue where the borders between sound and poetry may porously pass Voicing Through Saussure by Vincent Barras and Jacques Demierre. Beyond Music is committed to what’s new and audiences who want to experience it.

Epitomizing Beyond Music’s ideals, Ulrich Krieger knows no musical boundaries as he regularly collaborates with Lou Reed and is an interpreter of music by John Cage (available on Mode Records). Krieger is a professor of Experimental Sound Practices at CalArts and in performance his music embraces the possibilities of the saxophone, extending conventional techniques by circular breathing and producing multiple tones combined with electronics.
