Explore the Ancient Art of Middle Eastern Dance

The allure of Middle Eastern dance (bellydance) is as old as this ancient dance form itself. There are many theories about the dance’s origins. Some believe that it stems from childbirth practices (the dancers’ undulations being used to encourage women in labor) while others think it originated in connection with goddess worship, just to name a couple of the theories.

Bellydance is very popular in the United States today. Classes are popping up all over, and they’re filled to overflowing with students. Latifa is fast becoming one of the most popular teachers in Maryland, and her classes, located in Millersville near Annapolis, are always full! She's very well-qualified (see her credentials) and she teaches a variety of styles: Egyptian oriental and folkloric, including milaya, raqs assaya (cane dance), Ghawazee, Sa'idi, and Hagallah; Turkish; Lebanese Oriental and folkloric; Saudi women's dance; and good old American belly dance.

Here’s what her students say about her classes:

"Her encouraging response to my e-mail drew me to her studio, despite my middle age and less than ideal figure. Since the first class, I have felt completely accepted. I am willing to try any dance move because I know there will not be any ridicule. Latifa patiently develops our dance steps one layer at a time, from the basic step to facial expression. More importantly, she encourages us to express the joy dance brings to us."

"Women are always in search of something to make them feel beautiful and Latifa offers this opportunity to the women in her class. Her music selections and choreography range from fun and lively to sassy and sexy. For those of us who are beginners, she teaches us to feel uninhibited while we’re learning the dance. I especially like how Latifa gives us background information about her music selections. She tells us what each song is about, the country of origin and teaches us how to convey the meaning of the song through the choreography. Most importantly, the class is just plain fun! Latifa will have you hooked on her class through her expertise in Middle Eastern dance and by her dynamic personality. I am very happy I found her."

"Latifa teaches us about of the culture behind the dances. It’s not just about the movements, or the effects that these movements elicit in the audience. It’s about music, flow, womanhood, camaraderie, and forming a connection. Most importantly, it’s about your self image, and what you choose to make of your dances. Through my experiences with Latifa, I have learned a lot about myself and my abilities. I have more confidence in my skills as a dancer, and I have a more positive self image. I look forward to Tuesday nights, when I get to dance and have fun with ‘the girls’. Latifa is very positive, and patient. Working with her, and the other dancers in her classes has inspired and encouraged me to push myself, and even do public performances."
