BEHIND THE LINES
The Year’s Best Cartoons 2011

Sometimes provocative, always stimulating political cartoons have the power to both entertain and to instruct. Follow the year’s twists and turns in politics with Australia’s top cartoonists.

The year 2011 was one of the most surprising, unpredictable and turbulent in Australian politics. It has provided political cartoonists with a plethora of opportunities. Take a satirical journey back over 2011 in Australian politics with Behind the Lines: The Year’s Best Cartoons 2011 exhibiting at Riverside Theatres from April 11 to May 27. Entry is free.

The official opening of the Behind The Lines Exhibition is on Friday, 13 April 2012 at 6:30pm followed by an event at 7:30pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by Richard Neville, tribal elder of satire in Australia and co-founder of Oz magazine in Sydney and in London in the 1960’s. Richard is a noted author, futurist commentator and mischief maker. Richard is joined by honoured guest and Mayor of Parramatta, Lorraine Wearne to officiate the proceedings. Anthony Ackroyd will be appearing at the official opening of the exhibition in his unique and hilarious performance Being Kevin Rudd. This special show promises to be both funny and revealing as he reveals Ruddster’s classics, then takes the wig off and discusses being Kevin Rudd.

"It's great to finally see these cartoons where they rightfully belong, removed and isolated from the otherwise unreadable newspapers where they first appeared,” said Panelist, Comedian and Radio Host, Chris Taylor.

During the course of the exhibition, special conversations as part of the A Poke in the Eye with a Sharp Pencil Event will take place between legendary cartoonists and comedians and will complement the exhibition by engaging in discussion and reflection about the political events that have taken place across 2011.
