WHO:

Caitlin Macy is the author of a new story collection, Spoiled, and the novel The Fundamentals of Play. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Slate, and other publications. She is a graduate of Yale and received a MFA from Columbia University. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.
Arthur Phillips is the author of four novels, including the recently published The Song Is You. His first book, Prague, a national bestseller, was named a New York Times Notable Book, and received The Los Angeles Times/Art Seidenbaum Award for best first novel. His second novel, The Egyptologist, was a national and international bestseller, and on more than a dozen “Best of 2004” lists. Angelica, his third novel, was a national bestseller and made The Washington Post best fiction list for 2007. His work has been translated into twenty-five languages. He lives in New York City with his wife and two sons.
Mary Gaitskill is the author of a new story collection, Don’t Cry. Her previous book, Veronica, was a finalist in fiction for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. She is also the author of another novel, Two Girls, Fat and Thin, and the story collections, Bad Behavior and Because They Wanted To, which was nominated for the PEN/ Faulkner in 1998. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, Esquire, and the O. Henry Prize Stories, among other publications. Her story "Secretary" was the basis for the film of the same name. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and lives in New York.

Behind the Book is a grassroots literacy nonprofit working with low-income students in NYC public schools. Our mission is to excite children and young adults about reading. Working in the K-12th grades, we bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills and nurture a new generation of book readers.
