Beethoven & Schubert - Kalichstein, Piano September 24, 2010

The Pacific Chamber Symphony opens its 2010-2011 season with a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto number 4, featuring award-winning pianist Joseph Kalichstein. In 1967, two years prior to gaining a master's degree at Juilliard, Mr. Kalichstein made his New York recital debut and won the Young Concert Artists' Award. In 1968 he appeared on national television in his first guest appearance with the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Mr. Kalichstein has performed with major orchestras around the world, including the Chicago, London, and Vienna symphony orchestras, as well as the New York, Berlin, and London Philharmonics.

Schubert's First Symphony (D.82) will make up the second half of the program. Although written when Schubert was only 16 years old, this symphony is impressive. Schubert pays homage to his idol Beethoven by using a theme from the "Eroica" symphony as a second theme in this work.

Hearing these two works on the same program provides an opportunity to experience both the similarities and differences between the two composers. The pieces require almost identical instrumentation, but each composer uses the ensemble to express his own unique musical personality.
