This course will present a detailed study of the legacy and influence of the Venerable Bede, the father of English history and one of the most prolific and influential writers of the early Middle Ages. Beginning with Bedes last work and the early development of his cult, the course will then examine the society of later Anglo-Saxon England and the continuing relevance of Bedes writings. The focus will then move to Charlemagne, the Carolingian Empire and the Carolingian Renaissance and its indebtedness to Bedes work and that of his pupils, particularly the scholar Alcuin of York. The course will also include a detailed study of the arts of architecture, sculpture, manuscript illumination and music in both later Anglo-Saxon England and in the lands of the Carolingian Empire.
