EXHIBITION OF MICHAEL K. TAYLOR WORKS OPENS AT THE COLLECTIVE
Artist draws inspiration from music and literature

“Beats Rhymes & Mike,” a solo exhibition of artwork
by artist and writer Michael K. Taylor, opens with a reception Friday, February 6, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Community Artists’ Collective, 1413 Holman, in the Midtown Art Center Tea Room. The exhibit continues through March 14.
The exhibit features abstract interpretations of music and poetry through art with performances by trumpet player Sam Trump, poet Jerome Washington and DJ Flash Gordon Parks.
Taylor’s drawings, paintings or sculptures have been inspired by specific songs and literary works by artists such as Monk and Coltrane, The Roots, Kahlil Gibran, Nina Simone, DJ Screw, Adrian Piper, Tribe Called Quest, Ralph Ellison, Albert Einstein, Portished, Courtney Dirden, Radiohead, J. Dilla, Langston Hughes, Erykah Badu and Jerome Washington.
Taylor, a graduate of the University of Houston with a BFA in Fine Art Photography and a minor in English, was awarded the 2008 HAATX Individual Artist Grant, and his work has been featured at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, TSU Museum, the Contemporary Arts Museum and Blaffer Gallery and at the South Dallas Cultural Arts Center, Tulane University and the Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia.
His artwork is part of local and national collections while his writing has been published in the United States, Canada and Australia.
