On Saturday, November 12, 2011, the City of Baytown Health Department will facilitate the 11th annual Baytown Recycles Day, as part of the City’s Litter Abatement and Keep Baytown Beautiful programs. This environmentally friendly event is coordinated with hundreds of other Keep Texas Beautiful affiliates throughout the state.

Baytownians will be able to drop off the following items for recycling: motor oil, oil filters, anti-freeze, passenger tires, automotive batteries and recyclable metals. No other items will be accepted at this location. Residents will be asked to provide their name and address. No businesses or commercial drop offs will be allowed. Residents will be able to drop off items on the south parking lot of Lowe’s between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, and staff will assist in removing items from vehicles.

As a special event again this year, 10 used plastic grocery bags can be exchanged for a reusable cloth shopping bag from H-E-B and Keep Texas Beautiful (limit 2 per household, while supplies last).

This event is made possible by the continuing support of our 2011 Partners Against Litter Sponsors: Bayer Baytown Industrial Park, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company; ExxonMobil, NRG Cedar Bayou Plant, Liberty Tire Recycling, The Baytown Sun and Waste Management. Special thanks also to our Recycling Sponsors: Lowe’s Home Improvement (for the location), H-E-B and Keep Texas Beautiful (for the shopping bags), Wal-Mart (for recycling the batteries), Liberty Tire Recycling (for recycling the tires), B-ROC Metal Recovery (for recycling the metals), and FCC Environmental (for recycling the waste oil, filters and anti-freeze).

Last year, 60 local households participated in this voluntary recycling event. The Health Department collected 144 tires, 7 auto batteries, 232 gallons of used oil, 18 oil filters, 12 gallons of anti-freeze, 252 pounds of metals, and 260 disposable plastic grocery bags. All of these were recycled and kept out of our landfills. Keep Baytown Beautiful is a cooperative program of the Baytown Beautification Advisory Commission and the City of Baytown Health Department, bringing friends, families, coworkers and neighbors together to create a cleaner, brighter Baytown.
