Juxtaposing three bodies of work, Bayete Ross Smith's direct and powerful work explores the crossroads of identity, culture and violence. "Mirrors" poses the question of the (dis)integration of the various personae we embody through clothing. By contrast, "Taking AIM" positions the photographic subject in the center of a target, and the viewer as passive voyeur or perpetrator. The artist renders uncomfortably blurry our cultural dichotomy between violence considered recreational, or deplorable and even criminal. Finally, a site-specific iteration of "Got the Power" will feature recorded stories and songs contributed by the CIIS community.

New York-based Bayete Ross Smith is an artist, photographer, and arts educator. Ross Smith's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and he is the winner of multiple fellowships and residencies from Berkeley to Barcelona.

On view through May 19, 2012.
