The Alhambra Literacy Program offers a basic writing skills workshop to help adults improve their writing skills and to express themselves in a meaningful way.The program is based on four sections: (1) "Writing for Me," (2) "Writing for Others," (3) "Write All About It" and (4) "Easing Into Essays."In the first section, "Writing for Me," students write about what is important to them, using exercises to help them learn more about themselves while improving their writing skills. The second session - "Writing for Others" -- helps students communicate in writing, using formats and examples that are meaningful to them. Participants will learn to use the forms of writing that are used everyday, ranging from personal and informal to formal and business-like. Formats will include notes and messages, personal letters, invitations, business letters, job application letters, resumes, and public announcements.During the third session - "Write All About It" -- the goal is to learn to write through the medium of newspaper stories. Participants learn to write with purpose while providing information in a clear and concise manner. Grammar usage, writing in complete sentences, using commas correctly, and writing logically and sequentially, are some of the effective writing tools to be covered. The final session - "Easing Into Essays" -- teaches a five-step process for writing organized essays. Students will gain the tools they need to pass the GED Writing Skills Test Essay and other essay tests. In each of the four sessions, participants will learn to develop an idea, put it down on paper, share the idea, improve the idea, proofread, and write a final draft.
