Increasingly, the UK has become a surveillance society: one in which we aren't allowed to see the workings of government, nor governmental information relating to our towns and cities, yet are captured on camera more often than citizens of any other country in the world. At the same time, commercial services capture detailed information about our lives and sell it for commercial gain, without letting us decide who gets to see it.

At BarCamp Transparency we'll be talking about ways to improve transparency in government and commerce, including Internet activism, social media and technology solutions. If you're interested in a more open and democractic society, we'd love to have you there. Attendance is free: just bring your ideas.

Barcamp Transparency UK is a Barcamp style event run along the rough lines of transparencycamp.org.

This is a FREE event and the venue has plenty of space. In order for us to get an idea who is coming and so we can contact you with further details we will be releasing tickets on Eventbrite.

Visit http://barcamptransparencyuk.eventbrite.com/ to get yours!

For those who are unable to attend we are also running a virtual event, details can be found here: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2988465/

I would very much like to attend this event, but I am afraid I am otherwise engaged that weekend.

Is there any way I can present a paper in my absence? In particular, I would like to propose Open-Book Accounting. Since practically all ledgers are now kept electronically, and since there is no reason any electronic resource cannot be made world-readable, the ledgers of every Government department, every public official and ideally every corporation (or at least, every public company) should be world-readable in real time.

Secondly, I would like to propose Contract Transparency: that is, a contract made by any company or government department is enforceable only to the extent that it is published.

I really want to sign up for this but am such a luddite I don't know if I have succeeded. Does saying "I'm going" on Upcoming mean that I am registered...maybe this is a sign that I am too stupid to attend!

@ejoftheweb We are holding a virtual event a couple of days before for those who can't physically attend our main event, so feel free to drop in to that (details http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2988465/).

I do like the idea of contract transparency, and yes I would be keen to hear this discussed!

@cat.taylor We offer tickets now for the event (see link), but this is basically so we can get an idea of numbers and do things like assign wifi keys or contact you with important information.

However, we won't be turning people away if you were to turn up on the day :)
