During her long career (she made her first film in 1927 and her last in 1965) Barbara Stanwyck earned her reputation as a sophisticated lady with a wild side; even in comedies like Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve she demonstrates her dangerous edginess. She worked with some of the very best directors: Frank Capra, George Stevens, Rouben Mamoulian, Cecil B. DeMille, Billy Wilder, Anatole Litvak, Fritz Lang, Anthony Mann and Samuel Fuller. Versatile in the extreme (she appeared in melodramas, film noir, westerns, and comedies), Stanwyck's career and films will be explored on this day, with many excerpts and a minimum of three films screened in full.
