Photographers are alchemists. We use archaic chemistry and silver halides in our attempt to reproduce light. But capturing an image is just the first step in that process. Afterwards comes the difficult task of crafting a final image, of making the print say what we want it to say.

This five-week course is designed to provide students with previous darkroom experience the tools necessary to make fine prints. Participants will learn advanced techniques such as dodging and burning, pre-flashing, and split-filter printing. Students will also experiment with paper choice to better understand the differences between RC and fiber papers. Finally students will develop their eye for contrast and tone, and learn to visualize their final prints. Through demonstration and discussion, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the black and white printing process.
