In ancient days, Oriya businessmen (called Sadhav) had trade relationships with islands like Java, Bornio, Sumatra, Bali, etc. They used to travel to those countries every year before the onset of rain and return to homeland after the rainy season, doing good business. Their travel plan was logistically so calculated & planned, that they invariably used to reach home soil on the last day of Kartik (i.e. on the full moon day of month ofKartik). To commemorate the glorious past of that trade relationship & voyages to those islands, this fair called ‘BALI JATRA’ is celebrated every year.
