Straight from the clubs of New York City and Chicago, this forward-thinking crew is back in the DC scene by popular demand. Party to a unique mix of Israeli hip hop, bhangra, baile funk, new Mediterranio, ’80s freestyle and Afro beat—not to mention live rap, beat boxing and vocals. Yuri Lane started breakdancing and beatboxing in middle school and hasn’t stopped. His hip hop play From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beat Box Journey will return to Theater J in July 2007. He is working on a new beatbox album. Smadar, an Israeli-Moroccan, sings pan-Mediterranean music peppered with a gypsy sound. In 2006 Seeds of Peace honored Smadar for “uniting cultures to achieve peace through music.” The Epoch Times International recently dubbed Smadar “a euphonious and haunting voice” for peace and unity. Y-Love, a convert to Chassidus (the mystical branch of Orthodox Judaism), is an innovative freestyler who weaves seamless rhymes in English, Arabic, Yiddish, Hebrew and Aramaic, the ancient language of Jewish law. dj handler, founder of Shemspeed, Modular Moods Records and the Sephardic Music Festival, fuses live and recorded sound. London Radio’s 104.4 FM called him “One of New York’s hottest Jewish musicians” and Heeb Magazine listed him in their “Heeb Hundred.” www.shemspeed.com.

Tickets go on sale for JCC members on Thursday, May 3, and for the general public on Monday, May 7. Same-day tickets are available for purchase on-site starting one hour before the event, subject to availability. All ticket sales are final. JCC members, students with ID, persons under 25, seniors over 65 and groups of eight or more may purchase tickets at discounted rates when applicable.
