North Carolina author Kirsten Holmstedt will share stories of U.S. military women serving in Iraq on Saturday, August 18 at 2 p.m. in the Schell Room at the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street. The talk is free of charge and reservations are not needed. For more information, call (757) 259-4050.

Women have played a more integral role in the conflicts in Southwest Asia than in other past U.S. military actions. Holmstedt interviewed a dozen women from all branches of the armed forces for her book and shares their stories of daily life in a combat zone. Those accounts, and the obstacles and triumphs that accompany them, give a glimpse of the ground-breaking role women have played in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In recommending Band of Sisters, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer said her book deserves wide readership because of the way that it captures what has only been episodic in most news coverage.

Kirsten Holmstedt is an award-winning writer who spent hundred of hours interviewing female soldiers, Marines, airmen, and Sailors. She has appeared on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and testified before Congress.
