Author Marita Golden on "After: A Novel" April 25, 2007

In her fifth novel, acclaimed writer Golden takes an unflinching look at family, race, love and identity. After joining the police force and building a family with his wife, Bunny, Carson is finally in control of his life. He and his wife have great careers and three beautiful children. Then near the end of a routine shift, Carson stops a young black man for speeding. He orders Paul Houston to exit the car and drop to his knees. Houston retrieves something from his waistband and turns, Carson fires three shots. Paul, a son of educators and a teacher in Southeast DC, was only holding a cell phone and Carson’s carefully woven world begins to unravel. Golden’s nonfiction works--Migrations of the Heart, Saving Our Sons, and Don’t Play in the Sun—are this year’s Book Bridge titles. Golden is an NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Literary Work.
