Greenwood, by Herbert G. McCann

Greenwood, Oklahoma will be forever remembered as the site of the nation’s worst act of racial violence. During the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, 35 square blocks of black-owned homes and businesses were torched by mobs of angry whites. The violence was sparked by an alleged assault of a young white woman by a young black man. In Greenwood, author Herbert G. McCann steps back into the early 20th century and re-imagines the history of this massacre in vivid detail to retell the story as one of two young lovers who dared to cross the lines of race and class amid the simmering tensions of a power struggle between blacks and whites in a booming Southwestern town.
