Australia's indigenous art is celebrated nationally and internationally and continues to attract great interest and record prices at auction. Recently two paintings alone have brought more than $3 million at auction. The artists concerned, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Emily Kngwarreye will be fully discussed as part of the course. Fully illustrated, this course explains the history, growth and significance of Australian aboriginal art, looking at the mythology and iconography that informs the art as well as different techniques used. We consider bark painting, desert and rock art (including the enigmatic 'Bradshaws' and 'Wandjina') and art from the Kimberley and the Tiwi islands. One session will be held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
