Buitrago and Echeverri are the co-founders and creative core of Aterciopelados. The pair formed the band in the early-'90s out of the ashes of the punk group Delia y los Aminoacidos. They had originally planned to call the new band Aterciopelada Flor de la Pasion (the Velvet Flower of Passion), which reflects their affection for kitsch. They eventually decided to shorten the name to Aterciopelados, which loosely translates to "the velvety ones."
