Two performance based installations kick off the NEXUS 2008-9 exhibition season

For Immediate Release: August 25, 2008 NEXUS/foundation for today's art presents asNEXUS, performance installations by member artists J. Makary and Bilwa. Starting with nightly performances September 5 through September 8, and continuing as an installation of video, sound, photography, and scenic props, asNEXUS will transform the gallery environment with elements taken from, inspired by, and elaborating on video works created by the artists, creating a context that is continually altered over the course of the exhibition. The installation opens with a public reception September 11 from 6 to 9 PM and runs through Friday October 3.

J. Makary creates movement and video works that unite social dance, contemporary movement study, and the language of film. Her video, Wanna Kiss Myself, will be presented alongside photographs and text preserving the live performance -- documented with the cooperation of audience members -- in preparation for a visit by the Transnational Commission for the People's Betterment Through Collective Achievement (CCBTCCP). The CCBTCCP, led for the fourth year running by a Chinese delegation, sponsors an annual exhibition comprising works in which it is important for something to have seemed to have happened in a very satisfactory way, and Ms. Makary hopes, through her documentation, to be invited to participate.
Bilwa' s installation is comprised of elements from "assembling minutae" in which perpetual mvmt< >snd – a performance collective co-directed by Bilwa - explores how our senses evoke a person's presence or mitigate their absence and how memories are not static entities, but are recreated each time we call them to mind. Bilwa will reevaluate "assembling minutae" throughout the duration of the exhibition by altering accompanying video, design elements, photographic documents, theories, and the space accordingly.
