The course begins with the first encounters of Dutch, Portuguese, French and other Europeans with native Asian culture; and explains the political, social, and cultural peculiarities of contemporary Asia. It is a journey in time with the most fascinating events in the history of Asia, such as the discovery of South East Asia by major European powers and establishment of trading companies, the Cultural Policy of Dutch Indonesia to the reign of Suharto, the Civil War in China and communist rule of Mao Zedong, the American occupation of Japan, French Indochina and the Vietnam War. One comes to understanding of a tremendous impact on the world history of east west encounters and its political, economical, social and cultural impact on the world today.
