NEW YORK, NY, July 1, 2006 – The Blue Note is proud to present the legendary ARTURO SANODVAL, “arguably the most prodigious trumpeter of his generation” (The Guardian). Don’t miss the Cuban legend take the stage at the Blue Note, 131 West Third in the Village,

August 1 – 6 at 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $30.00 at tables; $20.00 at bar.

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world. Sandoval was voted Cuba’s Best Instrumentalist from 1982 to 1990.

Arturo’s appearance at the Blue Note in June of 2004 resulted in “Live at the Blue Note,” released as a CD/DVD on Half Note Records. The concert presents the multi-faceted instrumentalist as a trumpeter, percussionist, and vocalist, performing an array of jazz genres from straight-ahead to Afro-Cuban. Expect the unexpected when Arturo and his band return to the Blue Note stage for another series of legendary performances!

Arturo Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. Filled with a virtuoso capability, he desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does.

Yet the most meaningful indication of Kelli's worth is how her music makes you feel; how her songs cut deep into your heart and soul, and give you a window not only into Kelli's world but a new perspective into your own. LATE NIGHT GROOVE SERIES: BEETROOT featuring Fiona Wilkes (vocals), Jason Mills (drums) Marivaldo Dos Santos (percussion) – BEETROOT met as members of the globally acclaimed percussion performance group STOMP. Through STOMP's success, the three have toured in over 25 countries on 6 continents, worked on Quincy Jones' Grammy-nominated album, 'Q's Juke Joint', and appeared in the Oscar-nominated short film 'Brooms'. The unique rhythmic sensibilities these three honed after banging out stripped-down beats around the world is what Beetroot is all about. Their dirty, driving tempo contrasts sharply with Wilkes' sweet, smoky vocals, which are steeped in a lifetime of steel bands, soca and Lover's Rock reggae ballads in the massive West Indian community of Leeds, England. This juxtaposition of musical ingredients from different genres and continents is the foundation of the Beetroot sound.

Saturday, August 5, 2006 ~ 12:30am ~ Tickets: $8.00
LATE NIGHT GROOVE SERIES: MANCHILD BLACK - Although Manchild has gained a cult following over the last several years as the singer of the local Hip Hop soul group Urban Folklore, he's just starting to make waves in the New York music scene as a solo artist. A proponent of what he calls "raw soul"—an acoustic funk format buoyed by blues roots and lyrical messages of uplift—Manchild brings to the music scene original songs, a thrift-store bohemian sense of style, and a warm and inviting spirit. Like the music of his idols Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers, Manchild wants to both entertain and educate through inspirational songs and spoken word about life, love and self-discovery.

Sunday August 6, 2006 ~ 12:30pm & 2:30pm ~ Tickets: $19.50 includes brunch & 1 drink

CALIENTE! SUNDAY BRUNCH: ROMERO TRIO featuring Romero (flamenco guitar, vocals) Manuel Carro (cajon, percussion, vocals) Mario Rodriguez (bass, vocals) – Infusing classical and flamenco guitar with jazz riffs and contemporary melodies, composer and guitarist Hernan ROMERO brings world/jazz to a new realm with his release, Un Segundo Una Vida. Spiced with the exotic traditions that influence flamenco-gypsy, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean folk-and interwoven with textures of classical, jazz, and Latin rhythms, Romero's music is both sophisticated and accessible. It is sensuous, passionate, romantic and inescapably infectious.
