Donald Sultan to Speak at AFA ArtTalks

Tuesday, January 18, 6:30 p.m., at Christie’s

The American Federation of Arts is pleased to announce that artist Donald Sultan will be giving the first ArtTalk of 2011, to be held at Christie’s on Tuesday, January 18, at 6:30 p.m. ArtTalks, the AFA’s lecture series, features notable figures in the art world. Following Sultan’s lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception.

Internationally recognized for his painting, printmaking, and sculpture, Donald Sultan is best known for his sensual, large-scale paintings and monochromatic prints that incorporate images of lemons, flowers, dominoes, and other ordinary objects. At once representational and abstract, these works are rendered through an innovative use of unlikely materials such as linoleum, tar, vinyl, spackle, and Masonite.

Since presenting his first solo show in 1977, Sultan has had solo exhibitions in New York, Budapest, Dusseldorf, London, Nagoya, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Zurich. (In 1992, the AFA organized a traveling exhibition of his graphic work titled Donald Sultan: A Print Retrospective.) Among the many prestigious collections in which his work can be found are those of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2010, Sultan was honored with the North Carolina Award, a prestigious award given to outstanding North Carolinians. Sultan lives and works in New York.

The ArtTalk will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 6:30 p.m., at Christie’s, located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, which is on 49th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Following Sultan’s lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception hosted by Christie’s.

In-kind support for ArtTalks is provided by Christie’s.

Admission is $15; $10 for AFA members and students with valid identification. Seating is limited and reservations are required. To purchase tickets online, click here, or please call 212.988.7700 ext. 210.
