CONVERSATION WITH ART CONNOISSEURS:
ASIAN CONTEMPORARY ART – PRACTICE AND COLLECTIONS

In collaboration with New York based independent curator, Leeza Ahmady, ARTSingapore is
proud to bring together some of New York’s highly influential art connoisseurs in a special panel
discussion. It will “examine current issues, emerging trends, and new directions in Asia’s
contemporary art scene.”

The panellists will share their insights related to the processes of private and institutional
collecting in the United States and in Asia with a special focus on India’s contemporary artists
and their increasing global visibility.

Moderator: Leeza Ahmady is an independent curator, art consultant and a noted specialist. She
is also the Director of Asian Contemporary Art Week, an annual event spearheaded by the Asia Society with participation by major museums and galleries in New York.

Payal Chaudhri is a prominent New York art collector, alongside her husband Rajiv Chaudhri.
Their impressive private collection of Indian antiquities and contemporary and modern paintings
have been painstakingly acquired over a period of 18 years.

Thomas Erben founded his gallery in 1996, focusing on a multidisciplinary and internationally
oriented program, showcasing emerging as well as established artists. Conceptually minded,
the gallery strives to either rediscover or expose work that contributes to contemporary discourse
and extends the possibilities of the respective media. In the past 5 years, Mr. Erben has launched
the careers of a number of unique young artists from India and Pakistan.

Robert C. Morgan is an internationally acclaimed critic, artist, curator, and art historian. An
author of many books, catalogues and monographs on numerous contemporary artists, Dr.
Morgan’s focus is on the problems of the artist in an era of globalized change and renovation.

Hammad Nasar is a curator, gallerist and writer based in London, and is a Clore Research
Fellow at Goldsmith College's Visual Cultures Department. He is co-founder of the arts organisation
Green Cardamom, and the arts advisory firm, Asal Partners. He was a Fellow of the Clore
Leadership Programme for 2006-7 and Arts Director for the UK’s Festival of Muslim Cultures
(2006-07). He has lectured on and written about art from Pakistan widely. In his previous careers
Hammad was an investment banker and strategy consultant.

CONVERSATION WITH INDIAN ART COLLECTORS:
THE RISE OF INDIAN CONTEMPORARY ART

Over the last decade, Indian Contemporary art has become increasingly prominent and the Indian
art market has grown to such an extent that it is one of the most visible features of the international
art world. It is both apt and opportune to be able to listen to a panel of individuals who have been
deeply associated with Indian contemporary art. Therefore we invited established collectors of
Indian contemporary art to have a candid discussion about their collection. The panel will highlight
the different mechanisms of contemporary collecting. It will focus on individual as well as
corporate collections ascertaining what gives each its unique personality. This panel put together
by Savita Apte, will allow a glimpse into the myriad forms of collecting and the passions they
invoke in both collectors and viewers of the collections.

Moderator: Savita Apte is an independent curator, art historian and writer. She is a Director of
Asal Partners, a cultural consultancy and a Director of Art Dubai where she is responsible for
Education and Patron & VIP Liaison. Prior to this, she was the consultant expert with Sotheby's
for their Modern and Contemporary South Asian art sales for many years and as such instrumental
in growing the fledgling Indian art market. Savita is a member of the Advisory Board of the
Sovereign Art Foundation and is Chair of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, a new annual art prize
which fosters proactive collaboration between artists from the MENASA region and internationally
renowned curators. Savita Apte is also a correspondent with Daniel Birnbaum for the Venice
Biennale and an associate of the Serpentine Gallery for their forthcoming exhibition Indian Highway.

Joey Horn is a US citizen of Indian descent, who grew up in Paris and Manhattan. Her collection
includes contemporary Norwegian, Chinese and Indian art. Works by Hema Upadhyay, Atul
Dodiya, Anju Dodiya, N.S. Harsha, Nalini Malani and Shilpa Gupta are some of her favourites.
Joey has a BA from Williams College and an MBA from Yale University. She currently resides in
Singapore with her Norwegian husband and three children.

Sandeep Reddy is a collector based in Chennai, India. He is both Founder and Managing Director
of Peepul Capital, an India-centric Private Equity investor. He is also an active participant on the
boards of several companies – public and private. Reddy started his collection with Indian works
from the early 90s with Indian moderns such as Hussain, Laxma Goud, Vaikuntam, Paritosh Sen
etc. Then he extended his collection to include Western Contemporary artists and also began
to focus on Indian Contemporary art. Some of the artist in his collection include: Atul Dodiya, N
S Harsha, and Shilpa Gupta etc.

Namita Saraf has been instrumental in formulating and evolving the Hyatt Hotel collection in
Mumbai. From the very beginning, this collection had a definite theme. Namita will discuss this
deeply personal vision and the ways in which artists conformed or subverted the vision.

ART CONVERSATION WITH THE ART CONNOISSEUR: MICHAEL T.C. WANG
CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ART – WHERE IS THE PRICE HEADING?

Michael T.C. Wang is a prominent art collector and art dealer and the CEO of My Humble House
Art Space, a Taiwanese enterprise which mainly collects Chinese antiques and Chinese
contemporary art. He is also the chief art consultant of the Phoenix TV programme about art
collecting and art investment.

Come hear his views on the current trend in the exciting market of Chinese contemporary art.
He will share his views on the trend in this exciting market. Can the prices for Chinese
contemporary art continue to rise in the coming years? How should investors continue with their
art acquisitions?

This talk will be held in Chinese with English translation.

CHRISTIE’S PRESENTS: THE NEW WORLD – ASIAN CONTEMPORARY ART

Speaker: Jonathan Stone, International Business Director for Asian Art at Christie’s Asia. Jonathan Stone serves as Chairman of the Christie’s Asia Management Committee. Based in Hong Kong, he plays a vital role in the general management, financial control, strategic direction for business-getting and buyer focus activities for the Asian art specialist departments on a worldwide basis. Joining Christie’s after gaining a M.A. in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London, Mr. Stone served in London for ten years as a specialist and then head of department. Later, he was based in Tokyo as Representative Director of Christie’s Japan and took up his role as International Business Director in 2005.

MY TIME – MY WORK

Get an insight into internationally renowned artist Jogen Chowdhury who will talk about the socio-political background of his work and about his artistic development since the 1960s.

Furthermore, he will discuss the ARTSingapore 2008 Special Collector’s Showcase titled Jogen Chowdhury: Enigmatic Visions from the Glenbarra Art Museum and how it relates to his other works.

ART CONVERSATION WITH THE CURATOR: INHEE IRIS MOON
AN INTIMATE RETROSPECTIVE OF NAM JUNE PAIK

Inhee Iris Moon is an independent curator of contemporary and traditional art, who has organized many high-profile exhibitions around the world. Most recently, Moon curated an exhibition for the Korean Cultural Service New York titled Nam June Paik: Intimate and Meditative Works by the Master. Moon is a modern and contemporary art specialist and also a freelance writer for several international art magazines. She will talk about ARTSingapore 2008’s Special Collector’s Showcase An Intimate Retrospective of Nam June Paik. This exhibition will show a selection of very rare artworks by Nam June Paik from the private collection of world-famous Korean collector Kim Soo Keong.
