On Friday, September 11, 2009, in conjunction with ArtsHop, the Las Cruces Museum of Art will host an artist’s reception for sculptor Michael Naranjo. Carved in alabaster, “Reclining Nude” is a larger-than-life work depicting a female figure. The piece is currently on display at the Museum of Art. The artist’s reception will be from 5:00 PM-6:30 PM.

As a boy, Michael Naranjo dreamt of becoming a sculptor. While serving in the Vietnam War, a grenade exploded within hand’s reach, and he was left totally blind. Finding himself without sight and with minimal use of his right hand, he was determined to find a way to sculpt. Depending on visual images from the past, and despite a great deal of trial and error, he found a way to work through his disability. Today his sculptures are represented in individual and museum collections worldwide, including at the Vatican and the White House. He currently resides in Santa Fe.

On the subject of the piece “Reclining Nude,” Naranjo stated, “My second attempt at stone, but my first with pneumatic tools, and a large piece at that. I wanted to capture the smooth flowing lines of a nude at rest. A total learning process, I was pleased with the result.” Michael Naranjo invites visitors to touch and explore this work of art.

Funded by the City of Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Museum of Art is one of 14 participants in ArtsHop 2009. The Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main Street, at the north end of the Downtown Mall. Exhibits are accessible and free of charge. For information, call (575) 541-2137 or visit the website http://museums.las-cruces.org.
