InSitu hosts a public forum that revisits a particularly turbulent period in Richmond's history from 1961 to 1969. This period was marked by a set of injustices and riots that threatened to destroy the city, yet it was also a time during which several powerful community-based coalitions were formed. Bringing together members of these historic grass roots organizations who recount their personal experiences, this public forum will provide a platform for discussing some of Richmond’s largely undocumented history with a younger generation of political activists. This event is the first in a series of discussions that aim to explore the legacy of Bay Area community-based activism in the context of the modern civil rights movement, as well as examine possibilities for localized political change.
