San Francisco Performances presents the Bay Area debut of pianist Till Fellner, whose career has reached critical notice through landmark performances, acclaimed recordings and reflective interpretations. This recital program spans Haydn, Schumann, Lizst and California prodigy Kit Armstrong, and takes place 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the Herbst Theatre.

Described as "a complete pianist and probing musician" (The New York Times), Fellner plays Haydn's masterful Piano Sonata in C Major, Schumann's beautiful, touching Kinderszenen ("Scenes from Childhood"), Deuxieme Annee: Italie from Liszt's Annees de Pelerinage (fitting for Liszt's 200th anniversary year) and Armstrong's new work, Half of One, Six Dozen of the Other, which was composed for Fellner.

Fellner and Armstrong both studied with the great Alfred Brendel, a connection that led to Armstrong's writing the new piece for Fellner. (Armstrong is a California-born pianist and composer who at age 10 had already graduated from Los Alamitos High School, attended college, and composed more than 15 works.)

Fellner has just finished the last leg of the Beethoven Sonata cycle at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and continues winning critical favor as "one of the great musical chameleons" while exploring the spread of piano repertoire. The New York Times goes on to say: "Where the interpretive variety in his work was once a matter of different shades of Apollonian exaltedness, Mr. Fellner has added a Dionysian current."

Tickets to Fellner's Feb. 2 recital with SF Performances start at just $35. For more information, call (415) 392-2545 or visit sfperformances.org.

This recital is part of the Shenson Piano Series, made possible by Fred M. Levin and Nancy Livingston, the Shenson Foundation.
