With her work in drawing, sculpture, video, and performance, Andrea Bowers consistently explores individual expression within society at large. More specifically, she often pays homage to political activists and their cultural function. Her noted 2006 traveling exhibition, Nothing is Neutral, organized by Redcat, Los Angeles, featured works on paper, sculpture, and video installations that explored historical and recent events relating to the activist group The Army of Three—three suburban women who crusaded for legal abortions and women’s health rights from 1964 to 1973—and aid worker casualties in Iraq. While feminist and media critique are at the foreground, Bowers’ approach avoids dogma via aesthetic choices, humor, and heartfelt connection to her material. Her work has been exhibited internationally and in early 2007, will be featured in two solo exhibitions at Secession, Vienna, Austria, and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.
