Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters
“Art for All”: College Students Pay Tribute to Gilbert & George
Friday, March 21, 2008, 5:00–8:45 pm

On Friday, March 21, college students from the Bay Area will present their Gilbert & George-inspired artworks, performances, and artist demonstrations at Friday Nights at the de Young. There will also be a special collaborative art project by students of San Francisco State University, San Francisco City College, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Like the acclaimed British duo celebrated in the de Young’s current special exhibition, the students aim to create artworks that provoke thought, push boundaries, and raise eyebrows. For the evening of March 21 only, admission to Gilbert & George is free for college faculty and students with ID. The evening also features live music by the Shotgun Wedding Quintet from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The quintet’s avant-garde style is carving a new path for hip-hop with its controlled chaos of rap, big-band, electronic, and symphonic music. For the art activity on March 21, visitors can create their own Gilbert & George paper dolls using cellophane and collage materials. There are docent tours of Gilbert & George each Friday at 7 pm.

Regular gallery admission prices apply on Friday nights. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
