Bernard Shaw’s “Arms and the Man” is a light and cheerful piece set in Bulgaria at the end of a war with Serbia. Because of the war with Serbia, the male head of the Petkoff family is away in battle while fighting continues into the streets of town. Trying to escape from enemy fire a Serbian soldier climbs onto the balcony of Raina, the daughter of the household. The comedy continues as Riana hides the enemy soldier in her room while her mother and servants search for suspected intruders. The connection made between Raina and the soldier that night is carried throughout the play as Raina welcomes home her fiancé who is a hero of the Bulgarian army. Social formalities and customary matchmaking lead to even more tension between the couples of the house.
