To mark Armed Forces Day, there will be free entry for all visitors to Portsmouth's D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery on Sunday 4 July 2009. As well as the museum's normal exhibits, there will be new displays especially for the day.

Inside the D-Day Museum, model makers from the Surface Warship Association will be mounting a display of more than 40 highly detailed model ships. These will include a 7ft long model of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, 6ft long models of battleships HMS Duke of York and HMS Hood, and a 4ft model of the Royal Yacht Britannia. Smaller models including frigates and destroyers will also be on show. The latter include HMS Kent (a 1960s County Class destroyer), frigates such as HMS Active and HMS Falmouth, and the 1950s destroyer HMS Daring (the predecessor in name of the modern Type 42 destroyer).

In addition, veterans from the Portsmouth branch of the Normandy Veterans Association will be at the museum to talk to visitors about their wartime experiences.

Suitable for all ages. Free admission on this day only.
