Philadelphia-native Ari Hoenig has felt the music deep within all his life. Son of an orchestra conductor/singer father and a classical violinist/pianist mother, Ari began learning violin and piano from age six and by the age of twelve, he found his passion, and started drum lessons. After attending two rather prestigious music schools, Ari set himself up in New York and has been forging a very successful path ever since.

Ari has played with some highly regarded musicians and groups, including Jean Michel Pilc Trio, Kenny Werner Trio, and Chris Potter Underground and has also shared the stage with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Gerry Mulligan and Dave Holland. Ari now leads Punk Bop, which features Will Vincon on alto, Gilad Hekselman on guitar and for this special Rex appearance, Mike Ruby on tenor sax and Rick Rosato on bass.

Mike Ruby has also gone through some of the very best training in Canada – including the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance Program 2005-2007 from where he majored in tenor saxophone and attained a Bachelor of Music.

Mike is currently living in New York on a two-year scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music. He was the lone accepted student to receive the President’s Award for exceptionally high merit (2007). He also had several firm offers to choose from: the New School (NYC), The New England Conservatory of Music and New York University Jazz Programs!

Art Hoenig’s Punk Bop Band @ The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar, 194, Queen St. W. on Monday, June 16 from 9:30PM. $12.
