Archaeology in Nashville: On the Hunt for Ice Age Elephants September 14, 2010

The first inhabitants of what would become Middle Tennessee settled along the Cumberland River nearly 12,000 years ago during the end of the last ice age. At that time, the area was home to a wide variety of large, now extinct animals including mastodon.

The remains of these ice age elephants have been found throughout Williamson and Davidson Counties, and are helping archaeologists learn about ancient changes to the natural environment.

This program will discuss mastodons and their role in both archaeology and American history, as well as excavations planned for this fall at a mastodon kill site in Williamson County.
