Opening Reception: Saturday, September 22, 6 - 8 p.m.

Artist Talk at the Artist SPEAKeasy: Wednesday, October 17, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Fresh Arts is pleased to present Visible Unseen, a solo exhibition by Houston artist Regina Agu, as part of its ARC Exhibition Series. Agu's new drawings and collages incorporate a range of materials and references including found and original photography, as well as illustrated material from vintage biology and anatomy texts, transforming these mundane artifacts into meditations on the body, collective memory, and hidden and forgotten histories. Her work is rooted in her interests in mythology, futurism, science-fiction, and scientific frameworks.

The artist has likened her process to that of a researcher, “discovering and documenting layers of memories, much like the way we examine the rings of a cut tree or dig into layers of earth to reveal the realities of the past.” The works exhibited in Visible Unseen form a self-portrait at levels of observation that usually go unseen. Agu views her physical body as a reservoir of personal and collective memories, experiences, and myths.

Visible Unseen is on view from September 22 through October 26, with a free opening reception on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to Monday through Friday gallery visits by appointment, the show will also be open to the public on Saturday, October 6th from 5 to 10 p.m., in conjunction with the Annual Winter & Spring Street Studios Fall Open House and Saturday, October 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. for the monthly Second Saturday Open Studios at Winter Street Studios. In addition, viewers can hear from Agu directly about herself and her work at a free artist talk called the Artist SPEAKeasy on Wednesday, October 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
