Two experimental photography exhibitions open at NEXUS

April 10 (Philadelphia) Artist members Tasha Doremus and Susan Abrams, photographers working with experimental methods, will debut new bodies of work at NEXUS. Both exhibitions open Thursday April 10 and run through Friday May 2.

Tasha Doremus' new body of work depicts rich color images of trees in the open wilds and in the constricted inner city. She is drawn to the materiality of her craft pushing the limits of what a photograph is by adulterating the negative or print itself with slices, tears or burns. Doremus creates a tension between the placid subject matter and the additional, destructive compositional elements. This reflects the consternation felt by many that beneath the serene lives we lead, there is deep anxiety and guilt with where our world is going.

Susan Abrams’ body of work From Stillness embraces the arts of photography and hand papermaking. Using the Buddhist assertion that to discover truth the mind must be very, very still; Abrams uses the stillness and quiet focus of her practice to generate energy. Her body of work strives to make visible a still center within the surrounding maelstrom. All of the images are printed on paper made from abaca pulp, (derived from banana plants), and were digitally printed in collaboration with Rick De Coyle of Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints.
