Antebellum Richmond: On the Eve of the Civil War Walking Tour August 20, 2011

Discover the oldest area of Virginia’s capital city in a walking tour through the cobblestone streets of Shockoe Bottom. Enjoy the sights and smells of the oldest farmer’s market in the United States. See how commerce and industry made Richmond a center for manufacturing during the Civil War. Walk in the footsteps of enslaved African Americans on the grounds of Lumpkin’s Jail. Learn how this great city progressed from Indian trading post to metropolitan center by the time of America’s most defining conflict.

The tour begins at Main Street Station in the heart of Shockoe Bottom (lot and street-side parking). This semi-strenuous walk will last approx. 1 hour 30 min and will pass through areas of uneven pavement. Please plan accordingly.
