Once banned as a decadent Western music propagated by reactionary class enemies, China has embraced jazz to the point of organizing a festival on the doorstep of the Forbidden City.

TheBeijing Nine Gates Jazz Festival, held from May 25-31, 2007, broughtthousands of mostly young fans to see 18 foreign and Chinese jazz actsperform at a concert hall a stone's throw from the 600-year-old ancientChinese palace.

"Wehope more great jazz musicians can join us. We hope even more that thefestival can introduce our Chinese jazz to both Chinese and worldaudiences." said Huang Yong, director of the festival.
