The Milwaukee Art Museum's collection of ancient art started in the 1960s. The original goal in acquiring antiquities was to build a collection that would provide an introduction to the development of Western art, and that would establish aesthetic and stylistic reference points for the Museum's other collections, primarily of 19th and 20th century art.
