Ancient Alexandria: Lighthouse, Library and Learning June 14, 2012

This one day course examines the archaeological and textual evidence for the ancient city of Alexandria, today largely hidden under the modern metropolis. Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE, it became one of the greatest cities of antiquity, largely due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast. Under the Ptolemaic Dynasty it received a huge lighthouse to ensure the safety of its harbour, a library which was unrivalled and the 'Mouseion', a renowned centre of learning and scholarship. Incorporated into the Roman world with the death of Cleopatra, Alexandria would remain a city of learning down to the 5th Century AD. Details of this event may be subject to change.
