This annual tribute concert will celebrate the lives and legacies of three stalwarts of African American and African Caribbean culture: Pearl Primus, Nina Simone and Cheryl Byron - founder of Something Positive. The concert will feature Michael Manswell's Sweet Nina Suite, Pearl Primus' Hard Time Blues and Cheryl Byron's riveting Ancestral Chant. Something Positive is a performing arts and education organization dedicated to the art and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences.
Something Positive Cocktails & Conversations Fundraising Reception 6PM to 7:30PM
A pre-concert fundraising reception, "Cocktails & Conversations" - sponsored by Tropical Paradise Restaurant & Ballroom - will feature special guests including: Calypso King of The World- The Mighty Sparrow; Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2003, Faye Alibocus; acclaimed actress, Hazelle Goodman; Broadway producer, Aubrey Lynch; authors Akoshia Yoba; Peggy and Murray Schwartz (The Dance Claimed Me - A Biography of Pearl Primus); Recording artist, Kevon Carter; The Nyasha Rhoden Steel Pan Quartet; and music mixed by DJ Keith – at the LIU- Brooklyn Campus Riggio Cyber Café.
