Anaemia is a condition where the red blood cells in the blood are low. It’s the most common blood disorder and doctors sometimes describe someone with anaemia as anaemic.

Anaemia is actually a sign of a disease process rather than a disease itself. There are several kinds of anemia, produced by a variety of underlying causes.

The symptoms can be vague and goes undetected in many people. Poor concentration, shortness of breath and fatigue are just some of the common symptoms.

Anaemia occurs in up to 1/3 of pregnant women during the 3rd trimester. This is sometimes called anaemia of pregnancy. It is not considered abnormal unless the levels fall too low.

Understanding the causes of anaemia will help to ensure proper management of this condition.
