With a 2009 economic landscape being compared to the onset of the Great Depression, companies are preparing themselves for a tough road ahead. Many in HR have seen their assessment budgets slashed 20%, 50%, and even 100%. Given such events, how can HR continue to deliver the information and insights necessary for effective people management?

Is there a framework for making sense of the information in these difficult times? By studying periods of past mass layoffs, much can be learned about the challenges management will face today. Our research shows that while employees are, of course, more insecure after a layoff, they also have heavier workloads, higher stress, less teamwork, and feel "generally less valued."
