Playwright and librettist David Henry Hwang is joined by Long Beach Opera artistic and general director Andreas Mitisek to discuss his opera Ainadamar, composed by Osvaldo Golijov. Throughout the program excerpts from the opera will be performed by members of Long Beach Opera. Hwang, best known for his Tony Award–winning play, M. Butterfly, has also collaborated with composers Philip Glass and Bright Sheng. Golijov, recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, has had his works performed around the world by leading performers such as the Kronos Quartet, Dawn Upshaw, and the Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles symphony orchestras. Ainadamar, “Fountain of Tears” in Arabic, is a famous well in Granada, where Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca was murdered by Fascist forces in 1936.
